Due to recent regulations put in place by the Uttarakhand government, you can no longer simply drive to Mussoorie on a whim, especially on a weekend. The main reason for this is to combat the severe issues of overcrowding and traffic congestion that have plagued the popular hill station.
What do you need to do, if you want to visit the queen of hills?
Mandatory Online Registration: As of August 1, 2025, tourists are required to register online before visiting Mussoorie. This is a crucial step that you cannot bypass.
Crowd Control and Traffic Management: The number of tourists visiting Mussoorie has nearly doubled in recent years, leading to massive traffic jams, especially on weekends and during peak seasons. The registration system is designed to provide authorities with real-time data on the number of visitors, allowing them to better manage crowd flow and deploy resources like traffic police.
QR Code for Entry: After registering online, you receive a unique QR code. This code must be shown at entry checkpoints, major tourist spots like Mall Road and Kempty Falls, and during hotel check-in. Authorities use this to verify your registration and control who enters the town.
Carrying Capacity Concerns: The new rules are a direct response to a directive from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to address the hill station’s carrying capacity. The high volume of visitors was putting immense pressure on Mussoorie’s infrastructure and fragile ecology.
In short, a spontaneous weekend trip is a thing of the past. The new system requires you to plan ahead and register online to ensure a smoother, less congested experience for everyone.
