Trump’s Tariff Threat: Is India’s Russian Oil Deal a Target?

United States President Donald Trump is now threatening India with a substantial increase in tariffs, accusing the country of buying large quantities of discounted Russian oil and then reselling it for profit. This move marks a dramatic shift from the US stance at the beginning of the Ukraine conflict, when it had reportedly encouraged India to increase its oil imports to help stabilize global energy markets.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs has pushed back, calling the US position “unjustified and unreasonable.” The ministry stated that India’s oil purchases are a necessity to ensure affordable and reliable energy for its citizens. It also pointed out that other countries, including the US and those in the European Union, have continued their own trade with Russia in various goods.

The US has been critical of India for its continued economic ties with Russia, especially its purchases of Russian crude oil and military equipment. While China is also a major buyer of Russian oil, Trump’s administration has largely focused its pressure on India. This has strained a relationship that had been strengthening for years, as the US had previously viewed India as a key strategic partner to counter China’s influence in Asia.

The new tariff threats come on top of a previously announced 25% tariff on Indian goods, with the Trump administration also hinting at an unspecified “penalty” for India’s ongoing trade with Russia. Despite the pressure, India has signaled its intention to protect its national interests and continue its trade relationship with Russia.
