India has passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, to protect citizens from the dangers of online money games. The new law aims to stop addiction, financial ruin, and social harm caused by platforms that promise quick money.
Key Points of the Bill:
Bans Online Money Games: The bill imposes a complete ban on games that involve financial risk, regardless of whether they are based on skill or chance.
Promotes Safe Alternatives: It officially recognizes and promotes e-sports as a legitimate competitive sport and encourages safe, educational, and social games.
New Authority: An Online Gaming Authority will be created to oversee the sector, categorize games, and address public complaints.
Strict Penalties: People who offer, advertise, or facilitate illegal money games can face heavy fines and prison time.
Protects Citizens: The law is designed to create a safer digital environment for youth and families by blocking harmful platforms and addressing issues like fraud and money laundering.

Prime Minister Modi has welcomed the passage of The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025 by both Houses of Parliament.
The Prime Minister said that the Bill highlights India’s commitment towards becoming a hub for gaming, innovation and creativity. He stated that the this bill will encourage e-sports and online social games, while at the same time protecting society from the harmful effects of online money games.
Responding to the X post of Union Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw about passage of aforementioned bill, PM Modi said;
“This Bill, passed by both Houses of Parliament, highlights our commitment towards making India a hub for gaming, innovation and creativity. It will encourage e-sports and online social games. At the same time, it will save our society from the harmful effects of online money games.”
The government recognises online gaming as a growing part of the digital economy but is acting to ensure it benefits society rather than harming it.
