Rohit Sharma announces retirement from Test Cricket

Rohit Sharma, India’s Test cricket captain, has announced his retirement from the format.The 38-year-old batsman made the announcement on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, through a heartfelt Instagram story expressing gratitude for the opportunity to represent his country. In his statement, Rohit Sharma said,”Hello everyone, I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format.”

Over his Test career, Sharma played 67 matches, scoring 4,301 runs at an average of 40.57, including 12 centuries. However, his recent form had declined, with only one century in his last 19 innings, leading to his decision to step away from the format .

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) acknowledged his contribution, calling it the end of an era. As per several media reports, vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah is a potential successor.
