WhatsApp’s new document scanner is here: Scan to PDF instantly

WhatsApp’s new document scanner: WhatsApp is working on and has started rolling out a new feature that allows users to scan documents directly using their phone’s camera.

Here’s a breakdown of what’s known about this feature:

Availability:

iOS users: The document scanning feature has already been rolled out to iPhone users, appearing in versions like 24.25.80 and 24.25.89.

Android users: WhatsApp is currently testing this feature on Android through beta version 2.25.18.29. It’s expected to roll out to a wider Android audience in a future update.

How it works:

Accessing the scanner: When you go to attach a file in a WhatsApp chat (by tapping the paperclip icon or ‘+’ icon), you’ll find a new “Scan Document” option under the “Document” menu.

Camera integration: Selecting “Scan Document” will open your phone’s camera, optimized for document scanning.

Scanning modes:

Manual mode: You control when to capture the photo by tapping the shutter button.

Automatic mode: The app will automatically detect the document’s edges and capture the image, making the process faster and easier.

Post-scan options: After scanning, WhatsApp will immediately convert the image into a PDF file. You’ll have options to adjust the corners for cropping, rotate, adjust colors (e.g., color, grayscale, black & white), and enhance clarity.

Sending: Once you’re satisfied with the scan, you can send it directly through the chat. If you scan multiple pages, they will all be compiled into a single PDF file.

Benefits:

No third-party apps needed: This eliminates the need for users to download separate document scanning applications.

Streamlined workflow: You can scan and send documents without leaving the WhatsApp app, saving time and effort.

Improved quality: The feature aims to produce brighter and clearer images, enhancing the legibility of text and signatures.

On-device processing: The scanning tool operates entirely on-device, meaning scanned files are not uploaded to external servers by default. They are stored on your phone and are end-to-end encrypted when sent via WhatsApp.

This new feature is a significant addition, making WhatsApp even more versatile for both personal and professional communication.
