Akshaya Tritiya: The golden day to buy gold

Akshaya Tritiya, also known as Akti or Akha Teej, is a highly auspicious Hindu and Jain festival celebrated across India and Nepal. It usually falls in April or May, on the third lunar day (Tritiya) of the bright half (Shukla Paksha) of the month of Vaishakha.

Why is Akshaya Tritiya celebrated?

“Akshaya” means never diminishing — it symbolises eternal prosperity and good fortune.

Believed to be a day when any meaningful activity started brings unending success.

Associated with many mythological events, such as:

The birth of Lord Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Vishnu.

The beginning of the Treta Yuga.

The day when Sudama offered puffed rice to Krishna, receiving wealth in return.

Draupadi receiving the Akshaya Patra (a magical vessel that would never go empty).

Beginning of the Treta Yuga: It is believed that the Treta Yuga, the second of the four Yugas or cosmic ages in Hinduism, began on this auspicious day. This makes it a symbolic day for new beginnings and the start of a significant era.

Birth of Lord Parashurama: Akshaya Tritiya is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Parashurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He is revered for his valor and as an embodiment of righteousness.

Lord Krishna and Sudama: Another significant story is about Lord Krishna meeting his childhood friend Sudama on this day. Despite Sudama’s poverty, Lord Krishna treated him with immense love and, without Sudama even asking, blessed him with wealth and prosperity upon his return home. This highlights the themes of friendship and divine grace leading to material gain.
