Facebook-owned the instant messaging app WhatsApp has finally rolled out its payments feature for up to 20 million users across India. The feature, commonly known as WhatsApp Pay, has been launched with support from banking partners State Bank of India, HDFC, ICICI and Axis Bank. WhatsApp has designed its payments feature on National Payments Corporation of India’s (NPCI) Unified Payment Interface (UPI) system which is supported by over 160 banks. WhatsApp Pay was granted approvals to go live in November 2020.
The collaboration between the country’s top lender and WhatsApp Payments, enabled by UPI will boost the digital ecosystem and give push to government’s agenda of building a more digitally enabled Bharat.
Now, if you want to send and receive money through WhatsApp Pay, you first need to add your bank account on WhatsApp.
To add your bank account on WhatsApp, you will need an active bank account that supports UPI (Unified Payment Interface). The primary phone number associated with this bank account must match the phone number of your WhatsApp account.
