WhatsApp unveils AI Message Summaries: Catch up fast, stay private

WhatsApp AI Message Summaries: WhatsApp is rolling out an exciting new AI-powered “Message Summaries” feature, designed to help you quickly get up to speed on unread messages in both individual and group chats. This innovative tool uses Meta’s “Private Processing” technology, ensuring your privacy is fully protected.

Instead of scrolling through countless messages, Message Summaries provide a concise overview of what you’ve missed, powered by advanced AI.

Your privacy is paramount. Private Processing guarantees that neither Meta nor WhatsApp ever sees your messages or the summaries generated. This happens in a secure, encrypted environment, with private routing and verification to maintain anonymity and data integrity. Summaries are delivered without storing any original message data.

This feature is optional and off by default, putting you in complete control. You can enable or disable it and customize permissions in your Advanced Chat Privacy settings. Currently available in English for US users, a wider rollout to more languages and regions is planned.

Importantly, the process is completely invisible to other chat participants, maintaining your discretion. For technical details, WhatsApp has published an engineering blog and whitepaper.

Available on both Android and iOS, the rollout will gradually expand globally, offering everyone a smarter way to manage their unread messages.

How does it protect privacy?

  • Powered by Private Processing, Meta’s privacy-preserving AI technology:
  • Summaries are generated in a secure, encrypted environment.
  • Meta or WhatsApp cannot see messages or summaries.
  • No data is stored or retained after processing.
  • Requests are routed privately and anonymously, and only from verified WhatsApp clients.

User Control & Settings
Completely optional – off by default.

Users can:

Enable/disable the feature.
Choose which chats allow AI features via Advanced Chat Privacy settings.

Availability

  • Currently rolling out in English to users in the U.S.
  • Available on both Android and iOS
  • Planned expansion to more languages and regions later in 2025.
